Standards of Nursing

The Australian Nursing Council

The Australian Nursing Council Inc. (ANCI) is a peak national nursing body concerned with national standards and processes for the regulation of nursing. It was established in 1992, and each of the eight Australian State and Territory nurse regulatory authorities is represented on the council.

Nursing in Australia is regulated in the recognition that nurses are accountable to the community for high quality care through safe and effective practice. Each State and Territory has a nurse  regulatory authority, which is responsible for the regulation of nursing in the public interest. Before you can work as a nurse in any State or Territory in  Australia you must be registered or enrolled with the respective nurse regulatory authority.

ANCI has developed and regularly revises such documents as:

  • Code of Professional Conduct for Nurses in Australia .
  • Code of Ethics for Nurses in Australia (in collaboration with the Australian Nursing Federation and Royal College of Nursing, Australia) .
  • The Competency Standards for Registered Nurses .
  • The Competency Standards for Enrolled Nurses.

These and other publications are available from ANCI on request by emailing [email protected] or the website  www.anci.org.au

Assessment of Overseas Nurse Migration

A key role of ANCI is the assessment of overseas nurses who wish to migrate to Australia. ANCI has been gazetted by the Minister for Immigration to perform the assessment function for the occupation of nursing.

The outcome of the ANCI assessment is a determination about the eligibility of over- seas-educated nurses to apply for registration. Should the ANCI determine that a nurse is eligible to apply for registration, this counts towards the points that can be gained for immigration purposes.

Further information about immigration can be obtained from the ANCI website www.anci.org.au

Nurse Education

The nurse regulatory authorities are responsible under their respective legislation for accrediting nursing courses leading to registration or enrolment as a nurse. Graduates must be able to demonstrate the core competency standards for registration or enrolment, which are the ANCI Competency Standards.

Undergraduate courses that lead to registration as a nurse have, since 1993, been provided through universities. There are several other education providers who, along with universities, provide post-registration courses. Courses for enrolled nurses are provided through the Vocational Education or Technical and Further Education (TAFE) systems.

Further details regarding these pro- grams can be found in the Directory of Higher Education Nursing Courses 2000 - Preregistration & Postregistration, which is published by New Hobsons  Press Pty Limited. The 2001 version should be available soon and can be obtained, at a charge, by emailing [email protected] The website is www.nhpress.com.au.

Education Australia is an independent international organisation that provides service to overseas students who wish to study in Australia. The website is www.idp.edu.au and the email address is [email protected] All questions you have about course prerequisites and the like should be directed through them, not ANCI.
