Environmental Sciences at Griffith University

The Australian School of Environmental Studies at the Nathan Campus is acknowledged both in Australia and overseas to be at the forefront of multidisciplinary study, research and teaching in environmental science. It is one of schools of the Faculty of Environmental Sciences (ENS) at Griffith University.

The school was the pioneer in Australia of undergraduate environmental studies based on the integration of bio-physical and social sciences. It was the first school of environmental studies in Australia (established in 1975). The success of the school can be attributed to its interdisciplinary approach and the problem-solving methods used in teaching, together with skills development in communication, computing, quantitative methods and natural and social sciences.

The school's endeavours and achievements have led the way for changes in attitudes that have brought environmental matters into the core of government and community decision making.

Programs of Study


Bachelor of Environmental Science

The Nathan environmental science program provides you with the key content and skills required by employers in this field. It examines in detail the critical components of biological, physical and social environments, and develops a broad understanding of the complex relationships between them.
It prepares you for dealing with environmental problems and issues using an integrated professional method.

The program involves a sequence of core courses in a broad range of environmental areas designed to enhance literacy, communication and numeracy skills. You will have the flexibility at the end of three years to graduate, undertake an Honours year, or convert to the Bachelor of Environmental Management and complete one more year.

Bachelor of Science in Land and Water Management
The BSc Land and Water Management develops an understanding of the physical and biological bases of land and water management.
The major focus is the study of the physical, chemical and biological processes which influence our soil and water environments together with the social dimensions of land and water management.Conceptual, analytical and experimental skills in these areas are developed through core subjects in Soils and Geomorphology, Chemistry, Physics and Pollution of Soils, Land Degradation and Catchment Management, Hydrology and Water Resources, Water Pollution Chemistry and Geographic Information Systems.

Bachelor of Science Ecology and Conservation Biology
The BSc Eclogy and Conservation Biology considers the ecological and biological principles underlying both natural and modified environments. Natural systems, including many plants and animals are coming under increasing stress from the activities of humans. Ecology is the study of the way in which organisms interact with each other and with their natural environment. All higher levels of biological organisation are studied, including individuals, populations, communities and ecosystems, and the practical implications of such systems for management are considered. Subjects include Animal and Plant Diversity, Ecological Theory and Practice, Conservation of Communities and Populations, Aquatic Ecology and Field Ecology.

Bachelor of Arts in Environmental Management and Policy
The major focus of the BA Environmental Management and Policy concerns itself with the processes by which public and private policy measures affecting the environment are conceived, adopted, and implemented. Political, economic and administrative dimensions of policy are studied. Environmental policy is especially concerned with issues such as resource use, pollution, and scarcity. Subjects in areas such as sociology, economics, anthropology and other social sciences provide students with the skills to manage the environment and create and implement environmental policy.

Bachelor of Environmental Mangement

This degree provides you with a background in environmental sciences, while focusing on core areas in environmental management.
During your first three years of study, you will develop an understanding of the physical, chemical, mathematical, biological and social dimensions of environmental problems and issues. Key knowledge and skills are provided in the core courses while additional specialised information is provided through the major.
These skills are integrated in the fourth year of the program through an interdisciplinary, practical, team-orientated approach to environmental management. You will be given the opportunity of developing a practical understanding of environmental management by interaction with employers.
This program gives you the flexibility to exit after three years with the Bachelor of Environmental Science, or to continue on to the fourth year and obtain the Bachelor of Environmental Management. You also have the option of undertaking an Honours project within the degree.

This program focuses on environmental assessment and resource management, combining relevant process based knowledge in the natural and social sciences with essential aspects of environmental management, planning and policy. These programs develop skills in analysing alternative solutions for day to day management of resource industries, for assessing the economic, social and environmental impacts of proposals and the evaluation of environmental policies and plans.

Environmental education helps bring individuals and groups to a better understanding of the interrelationships between humans and environments. Environmental education encourages people to develop caring and committed attitudes that will foster the desire and the ability to act responsibly in their relationships with environments. This program provides a professional development program for environmental educators in schools and field study centres and in community education settings.
